Garage door openers use limit switches to track how far the trolley moves. Over time, vibrations, power surges, or weather changes can shift these settings.

A door stopping too early leaves a gap. A door traveling too far hits the floor too hard, triggering the safety reversal system. This back-and-forth puts immense pressure on the motor’s plastic gears. Adjusting these early prevents a costly mechanical overhaul.

Step-by-Step Limit Adjustments

Most modern openers have two adjustment screws or digital buttons labeled “up” and “down.” To fix a door that won’t close, turn the “down” limit toward the plus (+) sign.

• Small Increments: One full turn usually equals two inches of travel.

• Cycle Test: Run a full cycle after every adjustment to check the placement.

• The Compression Rule: The bottom weather stripping should compress slightly without forcing the rail to bow upward.
